Nostalgia in Stone

In association with the Heritage Department of Karnataka A solo exhibition by Manjunath Warli

Date: Jan 4, 2020

Nostalgia in Stone draws inspiration from Hampi (also known as Humpi)—a timeless landscape where history, mythology, and memory are etched into rock. Once the glorious capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is a place where monumental ruins, sacred temples, and boulder-strewn terrains stand as silent witnesses to a flourishing civilization.

concept note

Nostalgia in Stone draws inspiration from Hampi (also known as Humpi)—a timeless landscape where history, mythology, and memory are etched into rock. Once the glorious capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Hampi is a place where monumental ruins, sacred temples, and boulder-strewn terrains stand as silent witnesses to a flourishing civilization.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi embodies India’s rich cultural and architectural legacy. Through this solo exhibition, Manjunath Warli translates the enduring spirit of Hampi into visual narratives, capturing the dialogue between permanence and decay, memory and material. His works reflect how stone becomes a vessel of nostalgia—preserving stories of devotion, daily life, and lost grandeur—inviting viewers to reconnect with heritage not as the past, but as a living presence.
Manjunath Wali’s recent series of paintings depicts landscapes around prominent heritage sites, primarily those located in and around Karnataka, capturing their essence. The snapshots offer artistic perspectives into tangible artefacts of culture and history, weaving fragments of ancient times and glimpses from a bygone era. He brings alive these landscapes that have withstood the passage of time, imprinted with narratives from a distant past. All works in this series have been rendered plein air, on site, in an effort to represent the ephemeral atmosphere, the changes in light and colour, and effects of light and shadow prevailing at the place.

A Fine Art Photography Exhibition by city based artist Vivek Mathew ‘s Eighth Solo Show
  • There is always magic in the tragic,” reflects Vivek Mathew, whose practice is deeply rooted in observation and memory. His long association with an old-world Bengaluru coffee house—an enduring cultural landmark—becomes a quiet metaphor for the city itself, holding steady as layers of time, change, and urban expansion gather around it.
  • This sensibility informs his recurring use of windows as a visual and conceptual device—sites of transition that frame both decay and continuity. In his latest work, Gaze of Silence, Mathew engages with themes of pause, introspection, and transformation, describing the piece as one of the most organic evolutions within his extensive and distinguished career.

The art show was a vibrant celebration of creative connections across disciplines, bringing together visual art, sculpture, music, and live performance into a single immersive experience. Featuring paintings and sculptures alongside thoughtfully curated performances, the event highlighted the dialogue between static and performing arts.
A standout moment was the Kathak performance choreographed by Madhu Natraj of the Natya Stem Company, inspired by Vasudev’s painting concept and performed beautifully by the poolside. The choreography transformed visual narratives into expressive movement, adding rhythm and life to the artworks on display.
Curated with sensitivity and vision, the show created an energetic yet harmonious atmosphere, where artists and audiences engaged deeply with art in multiple forms. Overall, the exhibition stood as a spectacular display of artistic synergy, celebrating creativity, heritage, and contemporary expression through meaningful collaboration.
